Did It Really Happen?

She feels the toll the stress has taken on her body. She shakes her head, overcoming the exhaustion. Her Maid of Honor responds by brushing the bride's hair for the sixth time this hour. Every time she moves, her closest friends and family rush to straighten out her dress... like funny characters in an old silent movie.

The bride blinks. Had she worked so hard... pushed herself only to spend her wedding day in a wild daze? The bridesmaids are fussing with the dress. It is time to leave the nursery... to parade down the hall and stand behind those giant doors... waiting for the organ to play that familiar tune... 

The groom shuffles his feet and turns to his best man for support. He offers a handkerchief. The groom smiles. The best man has always been there for him. The groom takes the handkerchief and dabs at his forehead. It is snowing outside. How can he be so warm?

The minister is giving last minute instructions. The groomsmen shake their heads. Some even snicker. The groom suddenly realizes he has not heard a word the minister said! It is too late now. The minister has pushed the door open. It is so much brighter in the chapel than in this hallway! The groom squints. The minister is moving through the door. The groom cannot feel his legs... but they are moving, following Pastor Jeff through the door he is so incredibly thrilled to be passing through.

He feels his Best Man pat him on the shoulder. It is really bright in here. His eyes have not yet adjusted to the brightness. The reassuring pats to his shoulder are his only contact with the outside world...

Then he sees her... all in white... more beautiful than he has ever seen her before.

The rest is a blur.

He would not remember the moment of when that ring was slid onto his finger, except...

The groom turns on the DVD player. He puts in his most treasured disc. He sees his parents' proud faces in perfect digital quality. His children point at his nervous face as he pledges to love his bride... till death do they part... in amazingly clear sound.  He holds his bride's hand and relives the excitement-- the nervousness-- the magic that took place on this special day... once upon a time.
