In-House Digitization

All photo digitization is done here in our office. Whether you have ten or 10,000, your photos are scanned here.

Quality Scans and Resolutions

Photos are flatbed scanned to get the best quality (no page scanners) and digitized at 600 ppi (higher resolutions available).

Rotation and Cropping

We will rotate each image to its proper orientation and crop it to remove excess edges of the paper photo.

Color Correction and Touch-ups (optional)

Each image will be color corrected to bring out the lost colors. We do this MANUALLY with EACH SLIDE. This is not an automated process. We also do some light touch-up work to remove defects in the image like folds and dust.

Custom File Names

We will name your JPG images based on groups of at least 50. Just place the loose photos in a zippered plastic bag and write a name on the outside (for example, Kevin School Years). Other file formats are also available.

You can use the slider to compare the color correction before and after. The level of improvement varies, but in general, the transferred digital image will look better than the original photo.

Photo Scanning to Digital FAQs

How should I prepare my photos?

Be sure to remove your photos from frames, albums, folders and binders. Photos must be loose and placed in zippered plastic bags. You can put as many as you like in the bag, though there must be at least 50 photos in each group for custom group file naming.

How will the files be named?

Each file will have an overall name and sequence number at the end. For example, "1986-1987_001" or "Kate_001". When a date is available, we will start each group with the year for easy reference like "1985_Reunion_001". Just write the overall name for that group on the outside of the plastic bag. (50+ per group).

Does the Image Enhancement make that much of a difference?

Every photo is different and some need more attention than others. Image Enhancement helps with photos that are off-color, have spots, small folds, or fading. Your photos are scanned at a higher quality and then our editors review each image one-by-one. They will assess each image individually and use image software to improve it. Most photos benefit from the enhancement. If you only want some of your photos enhanced, place those in a separate bag.

Can you save the info written on the back of the photos?

Yes. There are two options. One, we can scan the back of the photo. It will be numbered next to the face of the photo, so you'll see the front then back. The next option is for individual custom file names. We will name each photo with the information written on the back. A photo with "Grandma and Grandpa 1936" on the back would have the file name "1936_GrandmaAndGrandpa". This method allows all your photos to be sorted by date (when a date is available). Both these options are an additional charge. Contact us to discuss your photos and the best way to prepare them for scanning.

Can you scan my photos in a specific order?

Yes. You will need to number each of your photos on the back in the order you want. Start at #1 and go through to the last photo. Use only whole numbers (no A's or B's, no 1.5 or 1.75 to squeeze in extra photos). The file name numbers will match the number on the back so those odd variations won't work. If you have your photos in separate groups, you can start a new #1 for each group (50+ per group). There is an additional charge for scanning photos in order.

How about large prints, can you scan those?

Yes. Standard photo scanning includes prints up to 8 x 10 inches. However, we can items that are much larger. Check out our page on Large Format Scanning which can include prints, posters, and newspapers.

How do I get the digital images back?

Once scanning is complete (and optional image enhancement), you can choose Cloud Storage or USB drive (or both). For Cloud Storage, we will upload your image files to a secure location and email you a link so you can share and download them. Cloud Storage is the recommended choice, but you can also get a USB drive with all your files. I would like to make a slideshow with music. Can you do that?

Absolutely! We offer basic and custom slideshows. You can choose either. Our custom slideshows are amazing! We combine your choice of music and video effects to create a memorable video to celebrate any event. Learn more about custom slideshow packages here.

Do I get my photos back after the conversion?

Yes, we give your photos back to you. We also offer the option to hold your media for 30 days. Many people who ship orders to us like this option to reduce return shipping costs. This allows them to review their conversions and then after 30 days, we will dispose/recycle the media.

Do you offer volume or bulk discounts?

Yes. For orders over 2,500 photos, we offer a quantity discount. The rate will be custom quoted based on the number of photos you have, the sizes of the photos, and the desired completion date. Contact us to tell us more about your photos.

Can I send my photos to you for scanning?

Of course! Place your order and get packing tips for your photos. When we receive it, we will give you an estimate and expected completion date. Need it done fast? Let us know your deadline and we'll do whatever we can to meet it.
